hardware hashes

i need to create a hardware hash for product activation, whats the best way to do this? and any demo code is great (the code doesnt need to be fast)

i was thinking combining the hard drive s/n with something then making a md5 from it. or is there a better way?

its only for low level protection, just to stop ppl randomly copieing it between pcs
