If you're looking at changing anything, I'd suggest MyBB. I've found it to be tons better than phpBB, which I hate, and much better than the free versions of IPB.

But back onto the topic of fighting spam...

I suggested coding Captcha! into the anonymous posting "process", and replacing the board's default image generator with it ... since I'm quite certain it's been cracked by now.
