    Completing what arthurprs wrote:

    Major version = Big changes that break backward compatibility.
    Version = Big changes or new features that don't break backward compatibility.
    Minor version = Bug fixes, adjustments, translations...

    You can use also the "Ubuntu" style: year.month(.day). IIRC Capcom uses this in their games too.
