I'm programming a game called "Cobal-Online". It's a german roleplay game with a very complex rpg system. I use PowerDraw for Graphics and fmod for Sounds.

At the moment you can create a character, collect items, fight, cast many spells(at the moment random spells), take Potions and talk with npcs.
Here (www.cobal-handy.de/Cobal.zip) is always the actual version.

The game has the following requirements:
- DirectX9
- 3d video card

Here are a few screenshots:

We're also searching for people who want to help us, our forum is at www.cobal-online.de (It's a german forum)

Hello nightmare_82 !

it looks very nice.
Do non combat attributes play a role in Cobal or is the game mostly action related (fighting+collecting items to solve quests) ? I mean, can the rpg system be compared with AD&D, or is it more like The dark Eye, german rpg system :?:

greetings

That's because all the rest is working on secret projects, all covered in shrouds of mystery. :D

But yes, its does indeed look mighty nice. In fact it reminds me a little of Diablo.
Are you doing the graphics as well? Because they are pretty good. The only part that I'm not too keen about is the heavy grain on the ground textures.

I've done a bit of editting in photoshop to see what It would look like if you softened the grain a little.
http://www.gameprogrammer.net/pics/outside/cobal1.jpg
You can do this by using gaussian blur and adding a tiny bit of (monochramatic) noise.
(image above is resized to reduce kb's,.. the lower left part is real size)

Here's another screen with a few strange things I noticed while playing.

http://www.gameprogrammer.net/pics/outside/cobal2.jpg
There were a lot of times when enemies went through obstacles. Also, the walls from the house look a bit odd in some places.

Also, the electric lights and the little tool shed(?) seem a bit out of place to me.

But, its very cool! Keep us posted!

Thank you for your nice replies.
@holybyte:
The non combat attributes will play a big role, but at he moment I'm adding many weapons first. The concept of the game contains 400 sites, it's very much we have to implement... You will be able to produce items, build houses and many other things.

@Traveler: Wow, tyour graphic looks great. Thank you for your advices.
Most of the graphics are self-made by one of our assistants and a few by myself, but unfortunately he now works on another project(because he gets paid for it :( )
We're searhing for a new graphic artist. If you like, visit our forum. I think you could help us a lot.
We're also searching somebody who creates sounds for the game.
All the others, who wants to help us, visit www.cobal-online.de

EDIT : Should I create a new topic for all english-speaking people ?

Thank you  .
There is no special way. We are two people who had the same dram: creating a cool rpg. He(Kuenz) makes the concept, world editing and so on.
And I'programming the game. It's a very hard and long work but it also makes a lot of fun

Well i've had the same dream. Create an outstanding MMORPG Game Creation System. This works in the way that, not only do I get to create my own MMORPG with my tools, but many other people with no coding experience can create their own game with my tools. Take a look at:

http://www.gtrpg.com/

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Very nice Nightmare_82. I was away for a while otherwise I would have said so sooner. RPGs are a personal favorite of mine. I wish you all the best in the completion of the game.

Also, what are the odds that an English translation would be around sometime? I think you'd have a much bigger non-english audience that way. Plus I get to play and enjoy the storyline(if I ever get free time these days). ;)

We will make an english version, but at the moment we have other priorities.

Here are 2 screenshots from the new version. There are many creatures because I wanted to test the AI.
At the moment I'm implementing the new version of the asphyre components and I'm including new graphics.
In the actual version there is a cool menu animation and a new creature is inside (a spider).
In a few days, I will release a version with the new graphic engine.

EDIT : Andhere (http://web128.webbox443.server-home.org/skelett.avi) is a cool sceleton animation from our artist. In a few days I'll insert it into the game.

Cobal is a very complex game. There are many features we have to implement so I can't say, when we can finish it. It is a hobby game, we didn't want to sell it.
But maybe I'll establish a company in a few months. Then I could spent more time in finishing Cobal and if it's good enouh I could sell it as a low budget-game.

Just remember that even 'War Craft' started out as a shareware game. Who knows, maybe Cobalt 2 will be a huge online RPG that'll rival the popularity of Diablo or Warlords Battlecry III. ;)

Either way, let us know first and we'll support your game all the way. :D

I agree, your game looked very impressive. You don't need to form a company just to sell it. Regardless our offer shall stand and if in the future you decide you want to make some money off your game please do not hesitate to contact us.

Good luck with your game.

Only in my dreams

Warcraft started as a shareware game ? I didn't know that. I think Blizzard is the best game company. All games had a very high quality.

Thank you. I'll contact you if I want to sell it.

I uploaded a new version. There are a few new features:
You can buy items
you can wear weapons/shields and so on
Weapon Damage is calculated
first version of a spellbook
Better Object Sorting
Skeletons and golems
ISO-Tiles
You now need DirectX9.c
Here (www.cobal-handy.de/Cobal.zip) you can dl the game(~36MB)

If someone wants to edit a World:
In the directory "Editoren" there is the file WorldEdit.exe.
You can edit the current world. When you want to create a new world, you need to delete/rename the file "Daten\Welt2.txt"

Warcraft started as a shareware game ? I didn't know that.

Pretty much all their games have shareware versions. I remember shareware versions of Lost Vikings, Black Thorne, Diablo 1, WC1 and 2. (yes, I'm a Blizzard fan too :) ) In fact, I recently learned that there was even a shareware version of Starcraft.

On a more on-topic note. Would it be possible to have smaller updates? I mean, is it really necessary to download a 36mb file to play the new version? I think more people would be willing/able to download/test a new version when the update is a smaller say 2 mb file.

Nightmare_82

We have started to program an updater which automatically download the files changed since last update. The only thing which is missing is adding/replacing graphics in the VTD-file. We'll try to finish it within the next weeks.

I made a mission editing tool and a new screen, where you can change the look of your model(you can choose your model, size and color).
And I changed many small things like level format and so on.

I added an orc made by our graphic artist. We can combine 2 weapons and 3 shields: (Here you only see one weapon and one shield). I'll make new screenshots soon:
http://web128.webbox443.server-home.org/screenshots/Screen_20041031_01.jpg

I also added particle effects for the spells, but it's not finished yet:

I didnt upload the actual version, because there was nearly no reply to the last versions I uploaded. I'll inform you when the new version is available.
