Hello!
Thanks Paul for the welcome.
I've been reading some threads and posts and it's amazing the amount of information out there.

As I said, I'm going to be seeing little by little, step by step my project game. I do not have much time because right now I have pending the Degree Project for to greet in Computer Engineering.
Once I'm received, hopefully by the end of the year, I could spend more time in my proyect.

In the last years I've been self-taught and complementing training I received at the University. I have no fear to learn new things and more focused on what is video games. I do not consider myself an expert in algebra, calculus in general and physics but I can say that these are things that I like.
From there to step into the games while not easy, but I have the ability... In my years of Delphi, and since I started in college I made some small games that did not require so much graphic at mode of practical.

I just need to be arrange more things that I have in my head. And learn more about certain data structures, such as Octrees, quadtress, checkerboards, etc. and graphics libraries/frameworks/engines.

Regards,
P.S: Sorry for my poor English.

Please do some browsing throught the forums for autopromotion system to kick in and unmoderate you.

I hope your stay here would be as pleasent as posible.
Do note that our site does not provide much content for beginer programers in Objective Pascal as we more focus on game development which does require athleast some existing programing knowledge.
For getting this initial programming knowledge I would recomend you visiting Delphi About website (http://delphi.about.com/which) contains tons of small aricles about programming in Objective Pascal in general. The articles are mostly written to be newbie friendly. I must admit that I learned a lot from that site.
Also you can visit Pascal Programming for Schools website (http://www.pp4s.co.uk/) which also contains lots of beginers friendly articles about programming in Objective Pascal.

Hi, I think I am human and strongly believe that, if this is the case, I am not a Viagra salesman. I may of course be wrong. I am a recent downloader of Lazarus and am currently peeking at the undergarments of Object Pascal, having just poked my head through the dense hedgerow lining the well trodden path of Basic->Z80 ASM->C/C++. I've never become best friends with C++, but it makes me cry less often the more I use it. OP looks like fun.

Hello PaulR and welcome to PGD! :)

I think you'll find that Object Pascal is BFF material! ;) Many here enjoy making games with it and continue to do so today. Some of those folks even make a pretty decent living from it too!

I myself am working with another community member on a commercial game for the new OUYA gaming console. So as you can see there is lots of opportunity for the language in your game development. Lots of tools and lots of different target platforms. Most of course, supporting Windows.

Hello, been using Pascal for a very long time... umm... since the Turbo Pascal 3.x days. I've learned other languages, used lots of IDEs, but I always find my way back to Pascal. My latest project is the realization of something I've been wanting to do for a long time, a nice and elegant cross platform game development solution in Object Pascal. Things have come together that allows me to do it without so many hoops (only a few rather than a 1000, hehe). So, hopefully soon I will have something to share here with the community.

Cheers and keep on coding!

Hi!

I'm worm. I've been programming since I was ~12. Started with bat files to make DOS games work, moved on to Basic/C/VB. I had the chance to learn pascal back in high school, but decided to take C instead as pascal was 'lame'. I regret that decision!

Fast forward heaps of years and here I am, poking with Pascal for some stuff I want to do at work! Seems like a good fit.

Best way to learn something is to make stuff, imo. So, I'm making stuff! But it comes at a cost of "Where to start?!".

I've been lurking the last few days, but alas, I'm not sure what to make of the pascal libraries for game development available that are cross platform. Is everything actually dead? Is there something that I should be using for OSX/Windows/Linux that is better than the rest, readily available, and actually compiles without tweaks on mavericks?

worm
07-11-2013, 02:35 PM
Hi I'm Worm.

I'm pretty certain I wrote a whole thing about me here yesterday, but it's gone. Or maybe I didn't. I'm not sure about any thing any more.... :(

Anyways, attempt 2!

Been programming since I was ~12. I started with bat files, then some quick basic, and quickly moved into C. We did basic and pascal in high school, but I skipped pascal claiming it was stupid. Was I ever wrong!

I'm currently making a game in my spare time in pascal, just picking it up as I go. I'm also working on utilizing lazarus and freepascal with my job :)

We shall see where it goes!

Hello everybody.

I'm not really sure how long such an introduction should be, so I'll make it short. My name is Jack, I'm 22 years old and know pretty much nothing about programming, let alone game development. I did some programming in pascal during high school, which I rather enjoyed, but since everyone else in the class was bored to death by it, our teacher moved on to excel, which means I'm basically starting from square one. I don't have big plans, but game developing seems like a rewarding and relaxing hobby, so I'm going to give it a shot. I started experimenting with SDL and this is what I've come up with so far (feel free to comment!), the movement doesn't work quite yet, though (not really sure why).

program sdltest;

uses
sdl2, SDL2_image;
const
SCREEN_WIDTH: integer = 640;
SCREEN_HEIGHT: integer = 480;
quit: boolean = false;
var
win: pSDL_WINDOW;
ren: pSDL_RENDERER;
background, sprite: pSDL_TEXTURE;
e: pSDL_EVENT;
ret: pSDL_RECT;
rect: pSDL_RECT;
thisTime, lastTime: integer;
dt: single;

begin
win := SDL_CreateWindow('Hello World', 100, 100, SCREEN_WIDTH, SCREEN_HEIGHT, SDL_WINDOW_SHOWN);
ren := SDL_CreateRenderer(win, -1, SDL_RENDERER_ACCELERATED or SDL_RENDERER_PRESENTVSYNC);
background := IMG_LoadTexture(ren, 'background.png');
sprite := IMG_LoadTexture(ren, 'sprite.png');
new(ret);
ret^.x := 0;
ret^.y := 0;
ret^.w := 64;
ret^.h := 64;
new(rect);
rect^.x := 100;
rect^.y := 100;
rect^.w := 64;
rect^.h := 64;
new(e);

while quit = false do
begin
thisTime := SDL_GetTicks;
dt := (thisTime - lastTime) / 1000;
lastTime := thisTime;
while SDL_POLLEVENT(e) <> 0 do
begin
if e^.type_ = SDL_MOUSEBUTTONDOWN then
quit := TRUE;
if e^.type_ = SDL_KEYDOWN then
begin
case e^.type_ of
SDLK_LEFT: rect^.x := rect^.x - 10;
SDLK_RIGHT: rect^.x := rect^.x + 10;
SDLK_UP: rect^.y := rect^.y - 10;
SDLK_DOWN: rect^.y := rect^.y + 10;
end;
end;
SDL_RenderClear(ren);
SDL_RenderCopy(ren, background, nil, nil);
SDL_RenderCopy(ren, sprite, ret, rect);
SDL_RenderPresent(ren);
end;

end;
SDL_DestroyTexture(background);
SDL_DestroyTexture(sprite);
SDL_DestroyRenderer(ren);
SDL_DestroyWindow(win);

IMG_QUIT;
SDL_QUIT;
end.

That's it. Thanks for your time.

I'm Sorry to hear that.
Was rest of the class less bored working with Excer rather than with programming?
Or was you simply unlucky of being in a class full of lazy pepole who werent prepared to learn anything new (most pepole know athleast some basics about Excel)?

Haha, they were just as bored with excel. The switch from pascal didn't really help much in that regard, but our teacher stuck with it anyways, because it had a more "immediate applicability".

Yes that is ture. There is more applicability to use of excel than some programming language. But since most pepole know how to use it it doesn't give you much help in finding job nowadays.
But I also have to admit that excel is quite powerfull and you can do wonder with it. For instance you can create a 3D graphics engine with it. Sorta. Check the link below and be mindblown as I was when I saw the article for the first time :D

Welcome hafizah.sukri to PGD forums!
PGD website is mostly focused on developing games and this require athleast some basic knowledge of programming. So this site might not be the best one you are searching for.
To learn more basics on Objective Pascal Programming I would recomend you visit http://delphi.about.com/ as it provides many articles which are more suited to newbie Pascal programmers. So by using that site you could lear a lot about working with arrays, procedures, functions, records and many more.
And once your programming skils improve and if you decide to go with game development you will probably find PGD site most usefull. But now if your programming skils are prety weak you would proably have much trouble understanding many things here.

EDIT: I'm woking on a tutorial which should bring game development a bit closer to those with less programming expirience but unfortunately progress on it is quite slow due to limited free time I have to work on it. So I'm afraid it probably won't be finished so soon.

Hello everyone, I'm a 15 y.o currently learning Pascal at school. I'm not that experienced with it, barely scratched the surface actually, but I'm looking to further my skills! As a project I'm making a text based adventure game, but I'm just having some problems with it, mainly not knowing how to do stuff due to lack of experience, so I'm here! I'm actually really glad that this site exists, I'll be sure to use it lots!

Anyway, hello! I look forward to working with you all! :)

Hi anyone who has signed up, posted here and then been waiting to be approved...

We operate an automatic promotions system, once you've posted here and had the post approved by a moderator, you MUST come back to the site and surf a little, there's lots to read, but this step is crucial as the promotion system won't promote you if it believes you're not active. And in it's eyes, you aren't active if the system hasn't seen you since you matched the promotion criteria.

So, I can't stress this enough, you must come back and surf AFTER your first post has been approved.

Unfortunately this is a necessary step to try and keep spam out of the system.
