John Carmack said at QuakeCon today that the Quake 3 source code will be released, most likely within a week.

A Quake3Delphi project coming up? :)

Wow, that'll be cool! Just think of all the engines that'll spring up because of it. Really nifty.

Has the group who converted quake 2 to delphi have plans to do the same for quake 3?

It should be possible to still make some sweet games/programs using the quake 3 engine.

No plans have been announced as yet, but then, the news is just announced. Give them time. They may come to the party. :) I do expect it to be a bigger job though than Quake 2.

In fact in the german (DGL (http://www.delphigl.com) community several people shows interest in convert the quake3 codebase to pascal compilers. We are just starting to prepare everything for this work and will try to start as soon as the code is released to the public. Even as a german community the official language in this project will be english, so everybody here is invited to help. Detailed informations will follow as soon as the code is released to the public and taken the first views. The Quake2-team did a great job and I think it would be great, if we show again, that even a big engine like quake is able to run on pascal compilers.

Well this is excellent news! :) Will you guys be sticking to FreePascal compatability so that it may be ported to other platforms?

*g* In fact, I am a freepascal user running linux, so I really hope that we will try to get it running with fpc (in delphi mode at least) somehow. However, before we thing might to handle it will be a long way ;) For further information (or if you like to help), please watch:
http://www.delphigl.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=27 or the wiki relating to this project (currently empty) http://quake3.delphigl.com.
Our english might sounds cruel sometimes, but I guess it should be enough to communicate with each other :)

Ah... well I definately recomment using Object Pascal. It's just a much better language then the older Extended Pascal that most Free Pascal users are used to.

I would suggest performing the conversion using Free Pascal. Since its obviously free and GPLed much like the source code for Quake 3 it will make it much more accessable to everyone else as well. Not everyone can afford to get Delphi, plus delphi is proprietory as well.

Allow me to clairify.... Use Object Pascal *in* Free Pascal. :) This will allow the source to be easily modified(if at all) to compile under Delphi should someone want to try and get a faster executable on Win32.

Besides Object Pascal is the king of the other Pascal dialects! :king:

If you don't know what I'm talking about, shame on you! :o Go read up in the PGD Library (http://www.pascalgamedevelopment.com/library.php).

I believe it is still going on, but rather slowly.
