I dont think theres anything wrong with using a freeform mesh instead of a TGLTerrainRenderer. A TGLTerrainRenderer is useful for large terrains but for smaller terrains I find a normal freeform mesh much better. Freeforms have accurate collision detection and shadows and also the TGLTerrainRenderer has 'popping' which I find annoying. Sometimes when you move around a TGLTerrainRenderer you see mountains just pop up.
