WILL
18-12-2005, 01:26 AM
That time of year is coming up again. It is soon time for PGD's annual competition and with that, I am pleased to annouce that on Jan 15th, 2006 the 2006 PGD Annual Game Development Competition shall commence!

The competition rules shall be released on the morning(GMT) before the start of the competition.

We will be allowing teams or individuals much like we did last year. Releasing your source will be optional however you will be required to submit a packaged executable with all game files for the targeted platform(s) supported.

Prizes, judges, rules and all further needed information will be posted within a weeks time before the start date of competition. For now, I suggest gathering your teams, tools and ideas for Jan 15th. Contest will be running for a total of 16 weeks, ending on the May 7th where we will award the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners with their prizes. We will also be honouring those in the competition that show great ability in specific areas of development.

We have high hopes for a fun competition and it should be a very successful event for 2006. Stay posted for further information as it comes.

May the best win! All you Pascal Loverz !! :D :D :D

b.t.w. would it be nice to post this at the Gamedev.net or would this be a waste of effort (because this is mainly a C++ site..?)

Would be a good idea, there might be some pascal codes on GameDev.net who don't know about this site....

I know Dom usually posts on the borland news groups and forums as well. :)

I know there are a few Delphi coders at http://www.retroremakes.com. They might be inclined to have a go at it as well.

I've posted to the Borland forums, has anyone posted the news to GameDev or RetroGames?

WILL

I've posted to GameDev.net, but as usual they are dragging their feet. On the other hand, they have posted about us before so...

I have posted on DevMaster.com though. They were quite quick about it too. I've also posted to ModPlug.com (http://www.modplug.com/) about the contest and the site. I hope that this will bring more musical tallent to the site aswell as the competition.

So whats the link to the forum topic?

I'll post on afterwarp.net about this too (and make a permament schedule link). ;)

It seems we are getting more activity there than here on PGD :?

You can read it here - http://groups.google.co.uk/group/borland.public.delphi.graphics?hl=en .

Hmm I just noticed a typo. I also posted the same thing to the kylix.graphics group. Tonight I'll post on the GLScene list and also Nehe.

Hmm... forum posts maybe, but certantly not traffic. PGD averages at about 10,000+ visits a month. All shy, I guess. :? It'll pick up a lot during the competition.

savage: Excellent Dom! Keep slamming away those news lists and other forums. Next week hopefully we'll have some of the banner graphics to put up everywhere.

I just announced it over at the german Delphi OpenGL Community (http://www.delphigl.com/). It has a rather big audience and hopefully some people from over there (maybe including me ;) ) will take part.

Thanks Sascha! ;) I'd be very happy to see you compete this year(well this 2006).

You know who else I'd like to see compete this year also? Tom Nugyens and/or Sulico(McClaw). This year should be a really good one. I'm hoping for even more competitors(and teams) than last year.

Hmm... I also wonder if the DGDev Team will be making an entry this year. They had 2 last year. :)

I've similar traffic on afterwarp, but I guess it's rather misleading... some search strings seem to be *very* off-topic  (i.e. "cabinet problem", "potter harry", "cooperative workload", "party girls"??!?)

[ok, I admit, this post is an off-topic too :) ]

Well I'm hoping everyone that can compete, will compete. It's going to be a good competition. And of course you all know what the prizes are like, from last year, right? Dom leaking the Borland sponsor news so early.

Only this year I am going to have everyone register their full 'real' names of all the individual or team members and their desired receiving address so that we may send them the prizes without delay. Plus it helps to give 'proper' recognition for their work.

No it had not. We acquired Delphi 2005 Professional for a price of $1,000 (USD), but Delphi 2005 Arquitect had a price of over $3,000 (USD), when I checked Borland site back then. If you look at Borland site for Delphi 2006 now, you'll find very similar prices (Arquitect edition costs $3,490.00).

An upgrade to Delphi 2006 Professional costs $460!! :(

I stand corrected. It was $3,000 USD. The rest of the prizes totaled to almost $1,000 USD.

Wow, pricey...

I might try and chime in, get an honorable mention or something. Never made a complete game though, so I'm not really sure how well I'll do or how far I'll get.

Some of the finalists last year were quite good, I look forward to this years compo.

We recently hired a new graphical artist where I work and when I pitched the competition to him he seemed to think it cool. So I will most likely enter.

Oh, and if you feel the need to leak some info about the theme or scope or direction of the competition, by all means feel free to do so :D
Just so that we can start dreaming games during the holidays.

Cheers,

Hey all!

Thank you all very much for spreading the word thus far! I'm sure this competition will be much bigger than last year and by the looks of it, will be more popular too. :D

Please continue to spread the word where you can to help increase the interest.

I will be posting some more information in the new year, before the official rules are released, about the competition, why we are trying this new format and how it will be run. Have a look out for that soon! ;)

I cant say 100% yet, it would all depend on the subject for the game, but so far there's a 90% chance of us entering.

As much as I wanted to participate, after talking with LPChip today we decided that we will most likely skip the contest since we have two pending projects, a commercial application and a game project underway. However, it's not definitive so things may change in nearest future. ;)

Hi!

It is a nice competition with nice prices, sounds very good.

But I think we will not compete, because we have to finish our game first, this will keep us very busy until End of January or maybe February.

Then we will try to switch to 3D instead of 2D, and I think we won't have something to show in May, I think we would need much more time.

But I am looking forward to what you are creating :)

WILL
10-01-2006, 08:44 AM
Hmm... you know... if you don't mind having to catch up and missing the points for a few stages, you could still potentially compete. You still have a chance at something even if you don't win 1st prize... ?

Just a thought.

Firlefanz
10-01-2006, 09:02 AM
lol

I would really like to compete and maybe I will just register, but you know we have to start from the scratch (no Omega anymore maybe) and use 3D with animated Models etc. If this works out of course.

I just don't believe we will have enough time to show something that is enough to compete, we have time from February (or later if I have to do some bugfixes after Commando Xenidis is out) to May, and we really start totally from the scratch.

In May we will have an animated X or whatever Model running around on a plain surface with a tree on it. :D :P
Without Collision detection but with a shadow. If we get this far in May I would be glad, and I am not sure if it is enough for the competition, only if it is a large evil tree who heavily attacks our player, lol
