This may be old news to some, but it's new news to me...
According to this article ('http://www.ps3blog.net/2005/06/30/ps3-linux/'), PS3 will ship with Linux as IBM ( see this article ('http://www-128.ibm.com/developerworks/power/library/pa-cell/?ca=dgr-lnxw09SpufsCell') ) has already got Linux working on the new Cell processor. This port to Cell is already on it's way to being commited into the mainstream Linux kernel tree.
