:) I think RTS would probably fall under current events.

The most common genre these days are RTS, FPS and RPG. Though platformers (at least the 3D variety) are still being made usually are the domain of consoles nowadays.

I seriously doubt that they had even a fraction of historical games in there though. :P

I'm missing some legends,
Wolfenstein 3D
DOOM

at least the used Duke Nukem 3D....

No Outcast

What a ground breaking game. Bring back voxels, all is forgiven!!

Off topic, but i reckon it would be possible to to make an Outcast style game these days with meshes using displacement mapping http://www.delphi3d.net/articles/viewarticle.php?article=bumpmapping.htm
It could make some very nice organic scenery.. One of the reasons why Outcast wasn't as successful as it should have been was its lack of 3D accelleration.. you can't accellerate a voxel. (yet)

I still don't know why they canned Outcast2

Duke Nukem was great! And Doom was the first game to scare the hell out of me. I also played Wolfenstein but the 2D game in Apple IIc, and Duke Nukem in DOS.

Could you imagine the latest 3D titles like Halo and Unreal, adapted for the old consoles and computers?

The Delta Force series of games used to be big on voxels. I actually thought it looked pretty good, especially in places with lots of grass and bushes. But ultimately they switched to a polygonal based engine. I wonder if voxels could be done better and faster nowadays with shaders.

There are some Delphi Voxel demos out there, but also look up stuff that the guy who wrote the Duke Nukem 3D engine has been working on and off over the last few years. His name is Ken Silverman ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ken_Silverman ) and check out his VoxLap project.

Edit : I've not looked at his stuff for a couple of years and it would appear that he released the source code to Voxlap in 2005 - http://advsys.net/ken/voxlap/voxlap05.htm

Who needs voxels? google for crysis and you instantly forget voxels. Look at the engine Dirk made, no voxels needed for a nice rendering...

All trough I agree to hardware accelerate voxels :P

I watched this voxel demo weeks ago and it looks very cool:

Impressive movie...

The level of detail is quite impressive in the movie.

The problem that has always plagued voxels is how to store the data effeciently. If you are holding information for a 3D pixel, the data structures involved can get rather large.
