I was trying to hold off buying one until Feb-March next year, but due to the fact that the 60GB model has backwards compatibility and the 40GB does not, the Wife virtually forced me to find a 60GB model for the boy due to his investment in PS2 games.
So after about 3 hours of searching, one is due to be delivered on Friday, with an extra controller and 2 games.

I hope Sony don't make me regret my purchase.

Sweet! I guess that seals PS3 support in JEDI-SDL huh? ;) (and maybe PS3 support for FPC in the future too  )

Best of luck with the new console. :D

Are you going to try linux and freepascal on it? Pascal games just using sdl should be compileable and runeable.

First I'm going to stick a bigger HD in it, then I'll install Linux and see how that goes, then I'll try FreePascal and the rest.

Or go haywire on this: http://forums.ps2dev.org/viewtopic.php?t=9429 the first hardware acceleration homebrew. (not even linux is needed.)

Cool. Here is the RSX demo in action.

All they need now is an OpenGL interface to it.

Info about SDL for the PS3 can be found here (http://forums.ps2dev.org/viewtopic.php?t=9315)

Looking at the source they use shader routines from the nouveau project (http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/) so MesaGL is to be expected.

 It seems that with the newest firmware 2.1 sony disabled the hack that allowed to use the gpu on the ps3. Source( http://ps2dev.org/ )

You know Sony doesn't seem very indy developer friendly... is there really any point to supporting their platform with all the effort you have to put towards getting into the console?

It's as if Sony is the new Nintendo of the 90s. :?

Console manufacturers sell consoles with a loss. Therefore, they need to have a monopoly on the software. However, homebrew is a way of software development that doesn't hurt their position, and there is demand for it, not providing a homebrew option increases the interrest people have to crack the protection. Therefore they provide a "crippled" environment where people can experiment as they wish.

For XBox-360, this is XNA, for the Playstation this is a sandboxed Linux. Now, I'm not sure what Sony wants to achieve. Of course if you have full power under Linux, third parties can release software for the PS3 through the Linux option. But this hasn't happened yet, so there should be no reason to block access to the gpu...

As far as cracking game consoles for homebrew, Tweakers.net is reporting the Wii has now been fully hacked (translate with Babelfish):

Time for an FPC port

YAY! I have read about that here (http://wiinintendo.net/2007/12/28/the-wii-officially-hacked/). There is a video too:

Maybe it's time to break my piggy bank :)

Well the FPC guys that were on IRC when I first let them know about WiiWare were all excited about the prospect of FPC making games for Wii. I think if you wanted to work your magic on another Nintendo platform, Wii might be the most lucrative.

Perhaps if you get some time to talk to Dom about it you can work out an indie-Pascal SDK pitch to them. They weren't too interested in such a tool for the GBA/NDS, but for Wii... there might be a way to pitch it to them that is a bit more attractive than the last bid he proposed...?

Welcome to the club. Though I have not even played mine yet as it's a surprise present for my son when he sits some secondary entry exams in the middle of Jan. So I have Resistance and MotoStorm which came with the machine, but I plan to buy Rachet and Clank and Unchart : Drake's fortune next month. What games did you get.

The machine itself came with no game.

I bought "John Woo's: Stranglehold" as a "at least I need a game" buy. I wanted to have Call of Duty 4, Assassins Creed and Uncharted, but ALL of them are sold out at the moment...

Then I went to a "Videothek" where you can rent movies and games and I took Conan, Medal of honour: Airborne and Jericho for two days... still have to check them out a bit more, but the first impression of the graphics is just WOW... so much depth, effects, details.... But as I said, I need to check it out a bit more... at the moment I need to watch TV for one or two more hours because my gf wants to watch a movie :) but then.......

Bought Burnout Paradise yesterday and this is so freakin' awesome! I have never seen so realistic physics in a game before. All you see in the following video is INGAME graphics. Thats so cool, you just WANT to wreck your car, because it looks so incredible. And online play is soooo much fun, because when you wreck an opponent you get a "mugshot" if he has the playstationEye installed (webcam). I have it and I tend to give them some funny faces when they take me down.... but look at the game in this small video.... I can't wait to get home from work!

My current gamelist:

- Conan
- Uncharted
- Assassins Creed
- Stranglehold
- Call of duty 4
- Ratchet and Clank
- Burnout Paradise
- Turok
- Tekken 5 online

I've had my PS3 since last November ( 60GB model with Backward Compatibilty ). [removed stuff that was repeated]
We find out this Friday or Saturday if he has been accepted into any schools. I think he will be, and I can't wait.

The package came with MotorStorm and Restistance ( I can't wait for Resitance 2 ), but shortly after opening the package I plan to get Uncharted for me and Ratchet and Clank for him ( and me :o) ). Eventually we'll get Burnout ( and a Playsation Eye ) as it does look absolutely fantastic!

Ouch! Your Ps3 did not meet your TV yet? ... you must be very self-controlled :)

I did not try Motorstorm and Resistance yet. I guess Resistance is "just another shooter". Don't know anything about Resistance 2.... I'll take a google at it :)

But yes, get that Burnout game.... I am no fan of car racing games, but this one keeps my adrenaline up!
