With the 'new' delphi 2009 we now have the option making a debug and a release profile.
So in the debug profile you can turn on range checking etc. And not worry about doing a release compile. Of course you should not forget to turn on these features in the debug profile as they are off by default as i found out the hard way once again :-[.
