  • Embarcadero buys KSDev

KSDev, the brand that gave you the DXScene and VGScene 3D components for Delphi has been acquired by Embarcadero recently. By the letter left on his site's front page, it seems that they have some plans for Eugene A. Kryukov work on some of these libraries.

"While at Embarcadero we are not bringing VGScene, DXScene, or ImageFX code forward. I am working on a very exciting next generation App Development project that will go beyond what the KSDev products were providing. It is safe to say that similar functionality of these frameworks will be made available in future Embarcadero development products. I believe it will be well worth the wait."

It seems that there is some interesting stuff happening at Embarcadero for the near future.

To learn more about KSDev or read Eugene's 'Thank you' letter go to www.ksdev.com.

Now I'm very excited!!! VGSCene and DXScene always have been very promising, I'm curious to know what will born from them now.

I suppose that they will build multi-platform VCL framework with OpenGL ES - that would be great.

I think the old (Now) components MUST be Open source to help other developers to improve the great components of VGSCene and DXScene

      Good job man...

      Interesting thread.

Well I suppose I should properly add that Embaracdero actually bought KSDev's IP (the components and other products) not the company it's self. I don't want to be suddenly accused of misinformation and deception all the time.

Any clues what are the benefits to Embarcadero from purchasing KSDev's IP and for that matter hiring the KSDev's guy?

I've never used that product and must say am poorly informed about it (always thought that it was some kind of skinning component set, similar to what Windows Blinds is to Windows).

Or was it (KSDev) some kind of competition to VCL that needed to be halted?

Quite interesting indeed. Seems like the people at KSDev and Embarcadero made a dodgy move by sealing the deal without informing any customers beforehand. Now PR hell breaks loose because people don't get what they paid for (so they say).

Just hope that previous customers are offered compensation of any kind. Opensourcing the code would be superb, but I doubt that embarcadero will do this, after they've put money on the table. Would be too bad if these issues slow down the development of any new cool UI librarie(s).

Hmm, from reading more information on this, seems like Embarcadero don't have any immediate plans for what they purchased (KSDev's IP). The developer & owner of KSDev was hired to work for Embarcadero.

Apparently, KSDev's products were even compatible with Lazarus and worked on Mac OS. I don't know if this has to do with Embarcadero's trying to make Delphi for Mac OS.

Well the KSDev IP was mostly a bunch of visual components that originally was just DirectX, but eventually continued on to be OpenGL as well. I believed he also worked a bit with Flash and media (such as video and image formats) adding special effects and such. These tools were being licensed for use with offered support with a fair sized price tag. There weren't cheap, but they were quite good from what I could tell was shown on the site (I reported about these not too long ago in the News section if you want to have a look back!)

Before the purchase he was working to port all his products to be ran on the iPad as seen in the few videos he posted on YouTube.

I would have to say only that Embarcadero seems to have an interest in the work that he was doing. I would doubt that they are purchasing the technologies to only stop competition, they aren't that big, it would be more so in their interest to actually make use of some of the stuff bought from KSDev. We can only speculate as to what the will do with it, but I doubt they'll just sit on it. There would be no business sense to that.

A very speculative issue, but apparently supports my last question: perhaps Embarcadero's move was to stop an immediate competition - nice looking GUI, compatible with a competing product (FPC/Lazarus). I hope the FPC and Lazarus guys won't be the next target for Embarcadero to purchase or we'll be doomed.
If you look at the app icon he presses in the video, it is Lazarus' default application icon
