  • 1st PGD Challenge Mini Competition

Enough talking about it already, we have finally set the dates for PGD's 1st mini competition. Theme and specific challenge rules will be announced on the day of the event. Everyone note on your calendars the 17th of June as the start of the PGD Challenge.

We can't tell you the exact theme of the competition obviously, but we can tell you that it'll be something simple so don't fret it you are programming newbie. This mini competition is open to everyone and anyone who uses Pascal or Object Pascal in your entries.

This was originally going to be a prize-less event, but thanks to the kind generosity of Johannes Stein (aka Stoney) he has offered up some game titles which haven't been claimed to be yours if you place among the top of the scored entries at the end of the competition. First place will pick first and the remaining after will get their choice until all prizes are selected.

    Prizes will be:

    • Mass Effect 2 (EA Download Manager code)
    • Terraria (Steam gift)
    • Frozen Synapse (Download with optional Steam key)
    • The Secret of Monkey Island (Steam gift)

An FTP server will be setup for you to upload your entries to. To enter the challenge, all you must do is upload your submission as an archive file. (zip or rar for example) Entrants will need to include basic documentation in the form of a readme file or a game manual including their full name (first and last) and email address to contact them should they win a prize. In this documentation, please include basic directions as to how to play your game. Failure to do so could greatly affect your score at the end.

Further details such as scoring, theme and rules will be provided on the 17th of June at the start of the competition. Everyone please check back here on the PGD site for those details.

Any news on themes? Fighting the FBOs on this end and optimizing like crazy. Going to improvise some 'upgrades' (or in other words exploiting glitches) for audio optimization... Other than that, GCSE exams for the year are almost and internal exam week heading this way, and thats why time is a go. Exams = no homework. yeehaaa

Theme will be announce on start day only!

I've sent it to Darthman to get translated into Russian. He is the only other person that has seen it. I'd like to get it translated into German as well, but have yet to hear back from Sascha Willems. I'd like to get DelphiGL's community involved as well. All are welcome, but the support of their site would help to better include German programmers.

Only one more week, if you haven't posted on your blogs, twitter or other game dev forum sites about this event do so now!

I'll post it on NLDelphi tomorrow!

I really have to go for something very simple, because I might be selected to join a summerschool that runs during the last week of the compo, giving me only two weeks to make the game. We'll see. It will be interesting (for me) anyway.

Those are Durban rather than johannesburg - how long have you been away.

That was my first PGD post in about 18 months - busy dusting off my code to see if I can throw something together for the min challenge.

Speaking of which; You sir have been away a long long time. How have you been? I hope that the last year and half have treated you well. Do you like the new site software so far?

Thanks WILL - yes it has been a long long time - I came back due to your facebook post around the Mini Comp. I have popped in now and again to see whats happening but never stuck around much.

Been focussing on my sport (Adventure racing) culminating in a 500km race near Cape Town last month. Going into a bit of a rest period so was looking at writing a game again.

I spend a lot on time on some online games as well (trackking.org, gpro.net). Great way to relax

Current Plans, write mine sweeper to remind myself how S2DL works. Then I am away from 17th-20th, and then have a look at the theme and maybe put something simple together for it.
Long term plans, write a decent online game in PHP/MySQL with a delphi client to assist players, it will probably be a Cyclign or Golf management game.

I have posted it at Allegro.pas' news, of course. And I'll post it again when I'll release a new Allegro package (this week I hope).

cairnswm: started living in SA 2003, ended up leaving in late 08, so more or less 6 years total... Miss the climate in the uk though

      Oh well.

Could someone refresh my memory a little and remind me when we start? That's be great. Cheers.

@code_glitch: I think the start date is the 17th June...

Erm...don't you already live in the UK? So how can you miss the climate there, or did you mean SA?

      cheers,
      Paul

Lol, sorry for being slightly ambiguous.

<2003 I lived in the uk.
      2003 - late 2008 I lived in SA
2008 - present I'm back in the uk.

Pro of uk: Broadband actually is broadband... I mean, when was the last time you where counting kilobits in hundreds? TELKOOOOOM.
Electricity 24/7 (although this is almost fixed the last time I was in SA. (2009)) ESKOOOOOM (Kev & Mike song here )

      Pro of SA: Competitive sport
Reasonable health & safety = you can do stuff
Climate.... Swimming pool and tennis court etc.

      Hope it clarifies a bit...

and Oo 17th? Better get moving a bit then.
