  • Lazarus on a Stick

No, it's not the latest snack sensation. It's just good old Lazarus for Windows on a 4GB USB Stick drive. Yup, The folks over at Blaise Pascal Magazine have put together a very nice looking custom-made USB Portable version of Lazarus for Windows that you can purchase from their website for only 35 Euros plus postage (7.5 Euros). But only 25 Euros if you are a subscriber of the magazine.

The USB stick doesn't just have Lazarus though, included on the stick is 25 MB Adobe PDF instructions, a wealth of documentation also in PFD format, lots of demos and the "pacman" project pre-installed too. There is free space for you to develop your own projects on the drive should you wish to store them on it and there will also be regular updates available so your Lazarus USB version will stay up-to-date! You can access this service via their update server.

Go check out the Lazarus USB Edition at www.blaisepascal.eu!

Hm, I hope they want us to pay only for the stick they deliver. Nevertheless, it seems pretty asbsurd to me selling an app which aim's to be the free alternative for the uber-expensive RAD Studio; it's just me, tho', no matter how custom-made it is.

Yes Lazarus is a free app, much like many other open source tools. But I can understand the idea behind it. It's for those who want a managed solution for Lazarus and not have to worry about configuration issues for each new version. I've encountered problems when going from a new version to the next just based on paths not being properly configured by an installer onto an existing copy on my system. So if they take care of these small glitches with each update, then I'd say it's well worth the small cost. Plus you get a cool USB drive with the new Lazarus logo on it and all the nice documentation that is all available inside. And the updates are free from what I read.

Proceeds go to the foundation that publishes their magazine, much like how we would do a compilation here of past competition entries.

It's just too bad they don't have one for Mac OS X or iOS.
