  • New TKinect Will Add Lazarus/FPC & New Hardware Support

The cool TKinect API header based library by Simon J Stuart is be getting a brand new name all thanks to new hardware options. Not only will you be able to use the Microsoft Kinect for Windows, but also ASUS' new offering the Xtion Pro Live. The specs on the two devices vary as does the shape and price so there is now some selection on these devices. Both hardware companies have licensed the technology from the company who invented it, PrimeSense.

The new version of the currently named TKinect library has yet to be named, but you will be able to make use of both these devices on Windows and Linux. It is rumoured that ASUS will be adding Mac OS X support for the Xtion Pro Live so support for Macs will be added as well.

Support for Lazarus will be added in the as well. It's not clear if the new version will support Free Pascal it's self alone. Delphi is currently supported.

Interestingly enough the technical abilities of the Kinect for Windows from the current Kinect for XBox 360 have been reported to be quite different. It would be interesting to know more as to why Microsoft made that choice. Could they have used different hardware or is this just a stunt to promote the XBox 360?

Microsoft Kinect for Windows will be available on Feburary 1st, 2012.
