My stance on used games

So they want to remove ability to resell our used games, right? Well, I'm against these practices. They are fully powered by greed.

Mark my words there will be times when you'll pay for brand new game same as for 5 years old if it passes.

They say that this is to provide more revenue to game developers. You know what? That's bullshit. Want more revenue streams? Make more damn games. Or go into F2P, I don't care. There are also subscription-based model which provides CONSTANT revenue.

I can't lend games to friend, or just plain give them if I already went through it? Bullshit. I remember when I used to swap with my cousins Famicom carts with games (since we all had famiclones, mostly one called Pegasus, though I had clone Funstation that looked like PSX except where in PSX is CD-ROM there were cartridge port). Granted, they were mostly pirate X in 1 carts, but we didn't know it was piracy at the time. We had great time playing them though.

Yes I'm sorry about what happened with THQ, great publisher, really. But their only advantage was Saint Row series and they weren't clever enough to make more revenue by not relying on their cash cow and sell other games too. They weren't even making use of their older successful IPs (Homeworld...). But for one things they were... They were morons.

Why? Because they got too reliant on one IP instead of developing multiple at same time. Which would provide "multiple revenue streams" so wanted by so-called game developers. Instead they chosen to take easier route by taking away our rights.

This is bad, this is really bad.

It's true that a lot of gamers will wait until the price comes down. Heck I will buy BluRay movies the first day so that I get a bit of a discount, they'll go up to full price afetr a week usually and then you'll have to wait until the holidays or boxing day to get a discount again. But some of the new methods of controlling how we own and use our games will not go over well with consumers. But publishers and big game companies have been trying this for years.

Prices on games are a bit different from movies in that they are full price on release and only devalue after a time. They devalue quicker in some cases than others. Seasonal games like all the sports games will price drop huge when a new title is coming out. Any games older than that will be bottom of the barrel pricing. All because of the stats being from previous years!

Other than those it seems that pricing on games is merely scaled by popularity. So the more popular games will take some time before there is a price drop. Now retail chains that model themselves around the trading in and reselling of old games suffering for this aside, some people just won't pay full price of anything. And this is a marketing effect caused by the constant "Buy One Get One Free" and "FREE with a purchase of..." and of course "XYZ% OFF when you Buy ABC". Everyone needs a deal now because everyone seems to be giving a deal. I believe that these "deal" pricing has pushed up the cost of games from something reasonable to the now average $60USD mark because of this and as such that, by some, may be a bit high that you will play through and be done with in a matter of 5-10 hours. (assuming how most games are made and the interest in an average gamer towards one title vs the next game out there)

It's all the marketers that are mostly to blame for this ridiculous tug of war and they should be working harder to fix it than to bandaid it with crappy choices like forcing us to play their way or not at all.

Ultimately "the customer is always right" and as such, we usually win. So we won't play an they will start dropping like THQs making poor business decisions. So if you don't like it, show them and maybe next year we'll see a huge uptake in OUYA sales and other concepts like it.
