Some newer Linux distros like Mandrake 10 have a font importer for windows fonts so it's possible, i even used Arial and other win fonts.

Yes, Linux can use the windows ttf fonts. Just copy them to your fonts directory. For me that's:
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/
You may have to rebuild the fonts index:
fc-cache /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/
although I think you can specify this path in your xorg.conf file.
