The best description of Computer Game Genres I've seen so far is in the book Gameplay and Design by Kevin Oxland
He breaks each genre down and explains why some games fit in some genres and not in others.. there are a couple of games he places in other genres where on first thought it would appear they belong in another. I can't remember an example of the top of my head.
