What characterizes a next-generation game? Are next-gen games the products of their respective platforms? Are next-gen games defined by bigger environments, better graphics, and faster animations? Or are next-gen games defined by the experiences they provide to consumers?

On Thursday, 29 March 2007, International Game Developers Association, San Diego produced a panel discussion of What Makes A Next-Gen Game? that enabled a dialog between video-game journalists and developers. One of the largest events in the history of the chapter, the event received more than 200 attendees, representing developers and publishers in San Diego, Orange County, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and even New York.

IGDA: What Makes A Next-Gen Game?

So has anyone gotten around to watching this yet? It's pretty interesting. Everyone you see in the still frame is either a writer or personality at a gaming magazine or show of some sort. So they pretty much live games.

I guess there is no better way to tell what should be considered 'next gen' than to pose the question to those that actually are in the thick of the players side of games.
