3D Game with OpenGL

Hi,

I'm programming with Pascal a long time now. Because I'm gamed a lot in the last week I want to program a own game. I failed many times to program a game. But I learned one thing: There are many things to do. But one person could do only one thing at one time.
This was the reason for failure in every attempt. It is very hard making textures, models, levels and especially programming alone. If I choose 3D, I need many people (Programmer, Textures, Models, Levels, Sound). I would do it but I found not enough people on any attempt yet. Are there interested people in a 3D-Game ? The type of the game is unimportant until now, because the thing is: Are there people which would do it really ?

3D Game with OpenGL

Hi Nils,

it all depends on the size of your project. If you want to make a first person shooter or an RPG in a big wide world, then yes, you will need some people that help here.

But you can also do small games in 3D. Games where you do not run around on hundreds of squaremiles. Just limit the world and you limit the amount of needed assets.

Do you have something special in mind? I mean, if you never did a game, why don't you start with something small? There are so many people out there who say: I never made a game, but now I want to make a MMORPG. It does not work this way.... make small steps to learn the basics. Did you ever play around with mathematics and physics in a 3D world? It's not that easy and if you never did anything dealing with this before, then you will get problems...

Anyway, I am sure there are many people out there who would like to team up to make a game. But if you start a thread like this there are many many things missing here to wake up people.

- What do you want to do? Just saying a 3D game with OpenGL is not that much information
- What is your role in the project
- What kind of people do you need
- Size and timerange of the project
- many many more things.

Greetings,
Dirk

3D Game with OpenGL

Hi,

I want to make a big project. You are right: It does not work if I try it directly. Because this I only want to make in the first step a little level. Maybe only two rooms. And then I think it would be great to build up the engine (grpahics, physics, sounds etc.) there. I thought about a Firstpersonshooter. An alternative would be a racing game, but I think that's much harder. It should be first a little project. And this can be build up. When all things in these two rooms or more are working, then we can start to make levels, effects (effects can be made in the two rooms, I think), models -> then we can start making the game. I don't know how many time it would cost. In one sentence: First we need a working engine, which may be improved on the running project, when someone sees a problem in the engine.
I don't know why I did not wrote these things in the first post, sry.

3D Game with OpenGL

One thing i learned in my 4 years of programming experience:

Nothing is as easy as it seems.. do not underestimate your goals.

This is not meant to discourage anyone. I only want to say that many beginning progammers are very ambitious. One year ago, i wanted to make a cool race game with cool models and my own physics implementation which was 100% shader driven. I learned that it was far too ambitious, so instead i made a nice small 2d game (almost finished). I believe i COULD make that race game, but it's just far to much work ATM... it would take far more than a year to do that (and would still be a very ambitious project ).

So start at the beginning, and do not make it too big. Be satisfied with the little succeses in your programming career. (I still remember how great it felt to get some simple shape or text on my screen after hours of hard work. )

Just wanted to share my experiences on this..
Coders rule nr 1: Face ur bugz.. dont cage them with code, kill'em with ur cursor.

I made the same experience and I want to start simple but not too simple. It would be an upgradable project, because if you start small you must program everything new on the next bigger project. I know how hard my goals are and I want to take them carefully and not as a easy project.

I'm not sure if you want to be a programmer, artist or program manager. If you want to be all, it's very hard. Project manager is almost no-go if you haven't lots of experience. So you can join a team and be programmer, artist, etc.

Programmer and maybe Sound/Music would be my thing. Project manager is in many cases very hard, that's true. It depends on the size of the project. I think now I could do it, if I could do it later - when the project is hopefully much bigger - I don't know.
I think the best thing we could do: Wait for people which raise their hands for things (graphics, sounds, etc.). And then we could plan everything with all details.
