    FreeStrike - Engine Testbed Project

    Hello

I'm currently testing out some concepts and ideas for upcoming projects. I have this testbed project I'm using, called FreeStrike. At the moment I'm trying to work out some issues with posting scores to my server. I think I got it working somewhat. If anyone would like to bang on it and see how well it holds up I would appreciate it very much. Later I plan to add a much more robust high score system once I get all the kinks worked out.

    Thanks.

    I am downloading it, .... just about 500 bytes/second
I need waiting for about 2 hours...

Is this a revamp of your FreeStrike game? or just an engine change?

Ouch! Let me know if you continue to have problems. I'm on a dedicated box so it should be super fast. I only have two domains on this server at the moment. Keep me posted. I will check with the data center as well.

This core game is the original FreeStrike 1.x game yes. I'm gearing things up for version 2.0 which will take full advantage of the new code base. Since I had a working game I figured it would be a great opportunity give the engine a workout, test out some ideas I wanted to implement moving forward and finally bring FreeStrike up to version 2.0 and hopefully get all the features in I was not able to get in way back in 2000-2001.

I've tried it for a bit and uploading scores appears to work well. Nice game btw, although you definitely need to work on the collision detection. Plenty of times where I got hit while it definitely wasn't a hit.

ps Download speeds aren't bad either. about 1mb/s

    Very nice game.. works good

Only when I tried to retrieve the online highscores, the whole thing got stuck. I noticed a firewall warning but I couldn't give th program permission to access the net because my mouse was invisible and the keys didn't have any effect. Had to kill the app with Ctrl-alt-del.
Coders rule nr 1: Face ur bugz.. dont cage them with code, kill'em with ur cursor.

Thanks. I will check on the collision detection. Later I will switch over the more precise PolyPoint detection system. Also, good to know the download speed is ok.

Thanks. Ahh, the firewall... ok thanks for info. I'm open to suggestions as to the best way to handle this.

Just tested, works fine on my GMA X3100,
the game a bit hard (the enemies always fire in player direction)

Thanks. Yea it gets even more intense on the advance and elite skill levels. I find playing with the mouse to be so much more intuitive and really the best way to play the game IMHO.

I have the highscore list displaying on the website now.

    Great game

Game ran smoothly but I do have a few comments
    1. Enemies move way too fast, even in normal mode (But of course, this is in later zones)
    2. Those upgrades could last longer heh
    3. Posting the score after you complete each zone does't seem like a good idea. Maybe you should make it available only when you die or choose to quit. (So right now, I've invaded your highscore list)
    4. Keyboard keys make the ship seem to move way to slow. Mouse is the only way to go in this game, and even more so because of #1.
    5. If you have low health and go to the next zone, you no longer here the warning noise

This game seems nearly ready for a final release though

Not a whole ton of gameplay really though; I think I played for half an hour and beat the entire game on normal and got to zone 7 on advanced (Nice that you automatically bump up the difficulty keeping score btw).
