Thread: Site is slow...

    Site is slow...

I hate to be blunt, but this site is -extremely- ssslooww.
For that matter, I have webspace that is not used at all-
Would there be any need for another Pascal (game dev) forum?
I have the space and the means to do it.
Just asking.. Because, I love Pascal and will do anything to make it more popular (except making adult movies ... er.. yep, even adult movies.).

    Best regards,

    Marmin.

Were going slightly off topic here, but if more people have this experience please do speak up. I personally don't have any problems.

    Site is slow...

Well now that your post has it's own thread as it should have. Yes, this server can be quite slow. A bit too slow for my liking to be honest, but it doesn't mean it's going to stay like this. Soon enough it'll get better. It's omething we are working on.

And to join you in your bluntness, a new set of forums is not what this community that was built up over the course of 3 years as DGDev and 5 years as Delphi Gamer needs, nevermind those that originate from the Turbo site or any other ones that are still active out there.

If you would like to contribute to the community, I'd suggest helping out either here or what other sites currently exist. Though I doubt you'll find a more active site than this one.

Well i personally find the site speed to be ok, like any other site.
Maybe the slowness depend on your location in the world ?
If you save your data in a proprietary format, the owner of the format owns your data.

I'm not surprised that this site is slow. If you save a single forum page to disk it's almost 200 K in size (of which about 100 K is graphics). You might want to try and reduce that as this will also be good for your traffic bill.

True, but images are cached and should not be taken from the server with every page request (unless of course the browser demands it, through alternative settings).

Sure they're cached, but the size of your cache is limited and so the page will have to be re-downloaded every now and then. Also, when you visit the page with a 56 K modem, you'll have to wait almost a minute for the page to load which imho is too long. I know you can't do anything about the 98K of HTML, but the 100K of images are waaay too much.

The strange thing is that typing a post (such as this) goes extremely slow. And my CPU is going at Max!..

Well I'm quite sure your CPU will not be maxed out by this site's scripting. I'd look at what's resident in memory and find out your systems 'usual' resource limits. That much will be able to tell you how many applications, services and other things you may run without having such problems.

It could also be the sign of a virus, spyware or some kind of worm. But in short keep your system in proper order by organizing, securing and not over abusing it(playing with systems files, etc).
